Yemini and Black Box have always conducted themselves within professional, ethical and legal bounds, and they are particularly proud of their work in keeping Ms. After the release of Controlling Britney Spears, Britney’s new lawyer Mathew Rosengart called for Jamie Spears’s immediate removal from the conservatorship after Vlasov’s allegation that Jamie Spears and the BlackBox security team secretly recorded Britney in her bedroom for over 180 hours without her consent.Ī lawyer for Yemini did not respond to the Times’ questions, but released the following statement: “Mr. Controlling Britney Spears contains similarly important allegations that could have legal consequences for Jamie Spears and his co-conservators. Then again, Framing Britney Spears launched a national conversation about the state of Britney’s conservatorship and thrust it into the forefront of public consciousness. This distance is probably by design, as Spears has repeatedly expressed her distaste for documentaries about her life, calling them “so hypocritical.” The ethics behind telling this story without Britney’s consent are dubious at best, and, at worst, a direct violation of Britney’s wishes. But in this case, after consuming both documentaries in one fell swoop, the opposite seems to be true. Although Hulu once again beat Netflix to the punch, V.F.’s Laura Bradley ultimately decided that the Netflix documentary was the one to watch. The situation is weirdly reminiscent of early 2019, when Netflix’s documentary about the doomed social experiment Fyre Festival, Fyre, was scooped by Hulu’s Fyre Fraud, premiering days earlier and containing an interview with the lead scammer of the enterprise, Billy McFarland. Netflix’s Britney vs Spears, directed by Erin Lee Carr, hit the streaming platform on Tuesday, September 28, and had the unenviable task of tackling similar ground to the Hulu documentary. Ahead of a September 29 hearing to determine the fate of Spears’s 13-year conservatorship, Netflix and Hulu have released dueling Spears docs.įX and Hulu’s Controlling Britney Spears debuted on Friday, September 24, and serves as the second part to the Emmy-nominated documentary Framing Britney Spears, picking up where the last one left off and taking us headfirst into the world of Britney’s conservatorship under her father, Jamie Spears. Yet again, it looks like society wants a piece of Britney Spears.
